Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid which acts as a μ‐receptor agonist. It is used clinically in human and small animal medicine for the management of moderate to severe pain when treatment with non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is contraindicated or inadequate alone for pain management. In fact, transdermal delivery systems for continuous administration of fentanyl (i.e. fentanyl patches) have become commonplace in human and small animal medicine. The use of fentanyl and other μ‐receptor agonists in horses has been limited by the concern about untoward effects, including central nervous system (CNS) excitation, in particular an increase in spontaneous locomotor activity, and a decrease in gastrointestinal (GI) motility.
