Benzimidazole and pro-benzimidazole anthelmintics are widely used in human and veterinary medicine. These compounds are thought to exert their antiparasite effects by binding to parasite tubulin, which produces subsequent disruption of the tubulin-microtubule dynamic equilibrium (Lacey 1990). Benzimidazole and probenzimidazole compounds are extensively metabolized in the host. Their metabolic pattern and resultant pharmacokinetic behaviour are relevant in the attainment of high and sustained concentrations of pharmacologically active drug/metabolites at the parasite target.
